Though this post may appear to lean slightly towards racial favoritism towards guest houses, please relax. I believe all guest houses regardless of country of origin can be fucking awesome. However, because I have a love of seeing how people from all over the world travel, I highly recommend googling Japanese guest houses ( or any other ethnicity that tickles your fancy) the next time you are searching for places to stay.
I recently stayed at Krorma Yamato Guesthouse in Siem Reap and had an amazing time. My room had two beds with aircon and wifi for ten dollars, but more importantly, I got to sample amazing Japanese food, Cambodian style, and see how Japanese travel. For example, I saw a mother and son wearing red and white striped "where's Waldo" type shirts with matching hats. Another thing I enjoyed was the fact that their weren't any annoying loud barely dressed 300 hundred pound drunk men yelling into their beer towers at 3am. ( not that 300 pound, barely dressed drunk beer tower yelling men are bad; I just enjoy their presence at a different time than 3am.)
So the next time you're looking for a unique guesthouse experience, think about staying in a guesthouse where most of the people are it is from the same country as you.. It'll be an amazing cultural experience and new way of relaxing!
